VISUAL JOURNALIST, DESIGNER, EDITOR

Thank you for taking a look at my visual journalism portfolio.

With ten years of experience in freelance editorial illustration, working with clients including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, LA Times, and more, I am passionate about working in news visuals. From 2020 to 2024, I gained valuable experience working full time in the fast-paced newsroom at Axios, ultimately serving as the Associate Visuals Editor. Most recently, I have been designing and producing the branding, visuals styles, and illustrations for the non-profit newsletter resource, Humanizing History. I also teach illustration at the college level, guiding students to develop skill sets for animation, conceptual illustration and collages for editorial applications, as well as many other communication and storytelling approaches.

ASSOCIATE EDITOR OF VISUALS

My role at Axios evolved over 4+ years, from Freelance Illustrator to Visual Journalist and Senior Visual Journalist, to eventually taking on the role of Associate Editor of Visuals for National news coverage.

Leading a small team of brilliant illustrators – who were responsible for shaping visuals styles and creating fast, smart, editorial collages and conceptual illustrations on-demand – was an honor and a position I enjoyed immensely. Covering topics such as politics, business, markets, tech, health, sports, and more, we developed the necessary subject matter fluency in a wide-range of topics, and executed smart, fresh visuals daily. Responsible for the quality of images for over a dozen newsletters and beats, I practiced critical, decisive news judgement, provided art direction for story series and video, and regularly coordinated inter-team collaborations.

BRANDING AND VISUALS

A non-profit educational newsletter, I had the opportunity to design several branding components for Humanizing History, including their logo, color palette, and their illustration and photo illustration styles, as well as produce all newsletter, website, and social media images. This resource is designed for educators and parents, highlighting high-level concepts and frameworks for talking to kids about race, culture, and the human story. I developed a visual style which visually bridges child-friendly and compelling with respect to adult readers learning about challenging topics. The design was created with efficiency of both time and budget in mind, while also being open enough to grow with the organization as it expands offerings, projects and scale.
